Nearly ten years ago, three local couples – Marshall and Sandy Goldman, Jeff and Jodi Gottlieb and Mark and Nancy Mintz – decided to make charitable contributions to University Hospitals, each selecting an area of significant, personal meaning. For this group of close friends, their gifts were important demonstrations of their commitment to the health system, the community and each other.
Since University Hospitals' humble beginnings in 1866, members of the Chisholm family have offered their support as leaders, donors and volunteers in Cleveland. Henry Chisholm sat on the first board of the Cleveland Hospital Association, and his granddaughter was one of the original twelve King's Daughters who started Rainbow Cottage — today's UH Rainbow Babies & Children's.
Christy Uher Ferguson was born with tricuspid atresia, a congenital heart defect (CHD) where the heart valve that controls blood flow from the upper right chamber to the lower right chamber does not develop. In 1978, Christy underwent a Fontan procedure performed at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's. This open-heart surgery reroutes blood flow by creating a connecting channel outside of the heart. As a result of Christy's successful surgery, she experienced an active childhood with no physical restrictions.
Anne and Donald Palmer have received their health care at University Hospitals for nearly 40 years, and they support the hospital system through their annual giving. "We are committed to UH, and very happy to see it continue to grow," says Donald.
